The New Moon.

The Sun and the Moon are together in the sky,
The Moon in orbit between the Earth and Sun.
A day when someplace in the world there may be a solar eclipse.
It is something we take for granted I think.

The Sun is about 1,392,000 km in diametre and 149,500,000 km away from Earth.
The Moon is about 3476 km in diametre and 384,400 km away from Earth.
The Earth is about 12,756 km in diametre at the equator.

(This means the Sun is 389 times larger, and 400 times further away than the Moon is from Earth.)

These three are so very different in size and distance from each other in the Heavens,
but they are in such places that both the Sun and the Moon
appear to be exactly the same size when seen from Earth.

I have always wondered if this was by random chance or deliberate design.

(The above figure is greatly distorted in scale.)

Ancient cultures saw the Sun and Moon as two eyes that watch over us.
One for the day and one for the night
- as masculine and feminine.
Eternal symbols of Balance and duality of nature.
Warm and cold, dry and wet,
fire and water, air and earth,
up and down, right and left,
yes and no, he and she.

The New Moon is the time of alignment and beginnings.
The Sun and Moon are as one in the sky.
(The Moon is perfectly between Sun and Earth.)
Their energy and gravity is as one, and all in nature is pulled toward them.
This is the time to plant, to sow seeds.
The time of starting new things,
as the power of the Sun and Moon are at their greatest together.

The Full Moon is the opposite.
It is then we see the Moon in its individual glory and magnificence
as it lights up the night sky.
In this time the Earth is perfectly between the Sun and Moon.
Their energy pulls us in opposite directions.
There is confusion and uncertainty.
The Full Moon is the time of endings, when that which is not strong can be taken apart.
This is the time of the harvest.

So today is a day to recognise the duality if the Divine.
To relive the origin of our reality and find ourselves as one again.
As it was in the beginning...
